In general a devil's advocate doesn't advocate on behalf of devils, unless someone else in the room is advocating against (or otherwise opposing) devils. The defining characteristic of a devil's advocate is positioning of self opposite the other in friendly discussion. My mother tells me that my maternal grandfather was a superb devil's advocate. She should know, as it takes one to know one.
