Well Vince,

 This is my personal experience.
When i was at Rutgers, this one professor called me delusional for

my ideas. However, the same idea, when i tried to explain to Bushnell/Agarwal, they thought i was brillant and let me do research with them.

Dr. Bushnell won the Young American Presidental Investigator Scholarship and is also a senior member of the IEEE.

Dr. Agarwal is both an ACM/IEEE fellow ( an award shared by a select few in the world).

The same was with my ideas on physics. When i tried to explain myself

to this one physics prof, he thought i was completely wack. Whereas, this other professor(affilated with Los Alamos) was extremely willing and thought my insights were worthwhile.

Moreover, I personally know programmers who are mentally ill, and

others, who take halluciganic drugs, who are execellent coders. Excellent coders as in sense that their programs were extremely stable, had almost no bugs in them and were extremely brillantly designed. So, it makes you wonder how an insane person can be so logical.

It has been my observation that even though these people are legally

insane, they still can function perfectly within a garbage in, garbage out system, as in writting a program. Theorectical Physics is not such a system. And most cranks/crackpots do not have tools to try their ideas and see if they actually work. Moreoever, academics shun away the cranks and crackpots ideas and theories, only worsening the situation.

As a matter of statistics, 1% of the world suffers from severe mental disorder. Then ask yourself, how many times in the news, you hear insane people, jumping off their windows, thinking that they could fly. Most cranks/crackpots who post here and other places also hold day jobs. And think of how they happen to survive, being a complete loon.

It's really, when you work things out, with enough reinforcement, delusional and completely wack people, can function just as 'normally' as sane people.
