In ANewKindOfScience Wolfram shows how simple rules lead to complex behavior. Indeed, systems with as few as three variables, e.g. the Mandelbrot set, can generate infinate completity. And out of complex chaotic system we find self sustaining emergent order we are just begining to understand. Top down analysis is studies as PertubationTheory and bottom up as UniversalComputation such as CellularAutomita via ComputationTheory and EvolutionaryGameTheory.
