1001 easy steps to internet marketing
XanthusInc associates have been involved with internet marketing since the beginning before there were books on search engine placement and as such we participated in the discovery of what works and what doesn't. Now, we are revealing some of our secrets here.
Free promotion
The most important keys to successful internet marketing don't cost a nickel after doing it and the payoff can go on and on for years. No-one will come to your site if they don't find it. If you want people to come, you must promote your site making sure it is indexed on the search engines and indexes and appears high on the list of search results. A main determinant of search engine ranking is link popularity, you will need to generate many links to your site to achieve top ranking in the key words your target audiences will search.
- Use key words frequently in your domain names, page names, page titles, headings, and text. Meta-tags are required, at least for keywords and description.
- list in http://dmoz.org the master directory of the internet.
- Hire a librarian if you are not one, categorization and information, not marketing is the criteria for listings to be accepted and effective.
- list all websites
- list all products and product use pages separately when possible.
- dmoz feeds over 5000 indexes and search engines but it takes time, be patient. It can take weeks or months to get listed and then results will improve over the weeks and months beyond that. Hiring an expert can help speed the process.
- register with search engines. Don't wait for dmoz, list sites as soon as they have content. The free http://siteadd.com seems to work well enough; the search engines want to index everything and don't seem to need to be told twice...
- Post your website address in every relevant forum or information site you can find.
- Put a "Sites that link to us" page on your site and add as many cross links as you can. Try Google:Add+Link and Google:Add+URL to find cross link opportunities. Add a keyword relevant to your site to the search to find the most relevant crosslink opportunities.
- join banner exchanges Google:"banner+exchanges" Google:"link+exchanges" and web rings Google:"web+rings"
- create informational pages and sites that promote your site. Promote them separately. Be sure your sites all link to each other.
- Popular site/keyword areas may require 200 or more links to get top search engine listings. Identify as many nitch markets as you can and promote each with a site or page. Examine the search terms people use to find you to help identify areas and terms to promote. e.g. WikiWorld referrers and search terms this month.
